I have a crochet question. ive checked some websites but cant find the answer. can anyone help me?

I have a crochet pattern and at one point the instructions are as follows: Ch 1, sc in next st, ch 1,* hdc between next 2 sts, hdc in next st; rep from*. My question is what does it mean to crochet BETWEEN stitches. I am fairly new to crocheting and never heard that term before. Noone I have asked seems to know either so I am hoping someone will read this and be able to help. If you can provide some detailed instruction as to how to do it that would be very helpful as well.
