How to improve close up shots?

I have hitachi HDC-100 camera. i want to take some close up shots but ive found they always come up blurry. my sister showed me the macro setting on her camera but when i tried it with mine it didnt make any difference. is there any settings i should change or any thing i can do in gimp that might help sharpen up the images
